Titanium Grade 5
(UNS R65400)
This Titanium Grade 5 is an Aluminium / Vanadium / Titanium alloy, where Titanium content 88-91%. Titanium grade 5 has good tensile properties at room temperature, excellent fatigue and crack resistance, and creep resistance up to 300°C, and all Titanium Alloy’s low density and high strength to weight ratio.
Common Specifications: Ti-6Al-4V, ASTM B345, UNS R65400 / R65401 (ELI), BS 3 TA11, 3.7164 / 3.7165, AMS 4963 / 4965 / 4967 / 6931 / 6932 (ELI).
Applications: Aerospace (components and engine parts), Chemical industry (equipment components), marine applications and, due to the material’s biocompatibility with the human body, medical implants and prosthetics. The ability to age-harden this alloy makes it a good choice for such applications as springs and fasteners.
Delivered condition: annealed or partially age hardened.
Heat Treatment: Titanium Grade 5 can be supplied in annealed condition, although the material’s mechanical properties can be enhanced by age hardening (with aging being completed as a post weld heat treatment).
Size range: 6 mm – 255 mm Ø
Weldability: Titanium. Grade 5 Alloy is easily welded in the annealed condition, or in the solution and partially aged condition, with aging being completed during the post weld heat treatment. Precautions must be taken to prevent oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen contamination.
Fusion welding can be done in inert gas filled chambers, or using inert gas welding of the molten metal and the adjacent heated zones using a trailing shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without resorting to protective atmospheres.
